Even though we don’t have a budget, or know yet, where all our money goes on a monthly basis, I do know that we spend next to nothing on entertainment. This year with the kids getting older, we researched some idea’s for fun family friendly activities. Staying home every weekend and playing in the yard is quite frankly, getting old.

Our local town doesn’t really offer anything in the way of family fun, so we had to search out of town, but still close. We’re about 30 minutes away from a Six Flags theme park, but feel that the kids a still too young to really enjoy the majority of the park. Plus season passes are relativily expensive.

Then while this was in our minds, we got a mailer from the Milwaukee Zoo describing their ZooPass. Hmmm, that sounds interesting. The kids are at a good age for the zoo, and I know that the wife and I always liked going to the zoo, so we went to the website and investigated cost. The cost for the 5 of us including parking was only $85 and the ZooPass and is good for 365 days from the date of purchase. We would only have to go twice in order for it to pay for itself. Plus the zoo allows carry-ins, so we can bring our own food and drinks. Plus there are additional perks, like member only events and discounts on some of the stuff inside the zoo that costs money. So, with the exception of gas getting there(it’s about a 45 minute drive), we could spent an entire day at the zoo and not spend a dime.

Well, we used our ZooPass this past Friday, for a members-only night called Rock ‘N Roar at the Zoo. For starters there were a lot more people there than I expected, but not nearly as crowded as it is on a typical weekend. Because of the theme, there were live bands all around the zoo, which was pretty cool, but the kids didn’t care. We packed water bottles and snacks and spent a good couple of hours walking around. Everyone had a great time. And we didn’t make a big deal of seeing every exhibit as we know we will be back soon. We will definitely get our moneys worth out of this pass plus it’s fun and educational for the kids. Money well spent.
