Back in August I wrote about a service fee listing on my checking account statement for $37. A charge I normally just ignored and ‘accepted’. I’ve finally took the initiative to find about more about what made up this fee by calling my bank and simply asking for an explanation. The rep said I was on an old style checking account that charged $0.50 per debit transaction and a $7 fee anytime your balance drops below $500. Then the rep went on to tell me that I should upgrade my account to their Totally Free Checking which is only available if you’re using direct deposit(which my wife has). That account has no minimum balance and no transaction fee.

Well duh! He was able to convert my account over the phone and said as long as direct deposits keep up I will not see anymore fee’s. And advised me to call for current options if the direct deposits ever stop to pick the different account.

So in a short 10 minute span, I was able to make a positive change in my financial life by making a phone call.

I was looking over my checking account online this morning and there was a new line item. It was called ‘Total Service Charge’ and it cost me $37. Old me has seen these before once in awhile for varying amounts, but new me wants to know what this fee is all about. Old me would just ignore it and assume it’s some legitimate banking fee, new me is angry to see it and wants to know exactly what it means, and quite frankly wants to keep that $37 to pay towards debt. I will be calling today to have them explain what it is. Then if time permits, I may start shopping for a new place to do my checking.

Earlier this year I opened an ING account and earned more interest on a relatively small amount than I’ve probably ever earned total from a regular bank. Lately I’ve been seeing that HSBC is paying 5.05% as opposed to INGs 4.5% so I decided to open an HSBC Direct account too and funded it with $200 to start. The registration process seemed more complicated than the ING one. I’m awaiting a letter via snail mail before I can log in and see the inner workings of a HSBC account. Then I plan to move the majority of savings to them and earn as much as possible. I know most PF bloggers rely on ING, but I haven’t heard much said about HSBC. Anyone using them?
